I got up a 4 AM today (after going to sleep around midnight) to finish packing and hit the road early. I got everyone else up at 5 AM and we left at 6 AM. I had the pop-up in the garage, so all I had to do was hook up the van and we were off. Everything was going fine until we ran into a hail storm an hour after we left. Everyone thought the windshield was going to break, but it didn’t. I told Colleen to open the window and grab some. As soon as she started to put the window down we both realized that was a BAD idea. Things were blowing so hard some of the hail ended up in the car anyway, because August found some on the floor.
Quote of the day from Ashley (after being in the car for 9 hours) “Is is the same day?”
The GPS said it was a 10+ hour drive. With a couple of gas stops, a few potty breaks and lunch we got to our campground just before 6 PM.
Here is a picture of our site at Johnson Lake State Park just outside of Lexington Nebraska.
We grilled up some sausage, heated up some pork and beans, whipped up a coleslaw and had a nice dinner.
Here is the view from out the end bunk window. Pretty nice!
So what did we learn from our first trip?
Leave early not late!
There were two camping sites at this lake, but the wonderful people at the first location pointed us in the right direction and we made it to the right spot with no problems. And that is a lot nicer than last year when we were driving through people’s back yards a midnight looking for the campground that we never found.
Apparently we have had some nasty storms back home and I just found out our neighborhood lost power. I don’t know if that is good or bad. I guess we will find out tomorrow. We are going to spend the whole day here tomorrow and leave on Sunday for Colorado.
